VIEWING A PROPERTY – 5 QUESTIONS TO ASK…

The importance of asking the right questions during a property viewing is often overlooked. But have no fear… DH diaries is here to guide you!

If you are a student who isn’t familiar with the process, this is a very helpful blog for you to get an insight on what people can ask to make their viewing more worthwhile and informative, which can assist you in making your final decision. If you are a first-time residential renter, this will hopefully help you too!

  • ARE BILLS INCLUDED?

Bills are a large part of taking care of your property, so the majority of people like to ask if bills are included or excluded, or if inclusive packages are available. It is always easier to calculate your rent affordability when you take your bills into consideration; this determines the monthly outgoings on your property.

  • WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THE TENANCY?

Confirm how long you want to live in the property for, this could impact if you are suitable for the house.

  • CONFIRM THE RENT & DEPOSIT?

Even though you’re probably aware of the rent price of the property that you are going to view, it is still a good idea to confirm it with the agent, so you can feel 100% reassured you have the correct details. What about the deposit? Our deposits are usually calculated as 5 weeks rent- an upfront payment for you to secure the property. If you wanted to go forward with taking the property, you’ll need to know the deposit in order to take the next step.

  • WHATS THE AREA LIKE?

Are you familiar with the area? Is it a residential or student area? If you are unsure on your surroundings, why not ask some questions in regard to the place you’ll be moving to. Get to know more about the location of the property that interests you and find out where the nearest amenities are.

  • WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF THE MAINTENANCE?

If the property is managed by us at Direct Housing, we are your first port of call for your maintenance enquiries, in other cases, the landlord may handle your maintenance. Find out on the viewing if the property is managed by us or managed by the landlord, and that will make you aware of who deals with any maintenance issues you may have (but hopefully you don’t have any)!

We hope this was helpful and we hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
